(Ultra) Marathon Monks

Watch the Marathon Monks documentary on YouTube

A short documentary describes the training of Japanese monks at Mt. Hiei who run heroic distances daily. For seven years they undergo trials and tests which include running 52 miles every day for 100 days on little more than a diet of rice and noodles, wearing hand-woven straw sandals and tabi. In total, they will spend no less than 1000 days on the road during their training and that is without the benefit of engineered food or technical clothing. What is truly amazing is their commitment. If at any point a monk in training cannot complete one of the daily training runs he must immediately commit suicide. Monks have died in training.

At the end of their training a monk will subject himself to a 9-day fast wherein he will not eat, drink, or sleep. If this final test is completed successfully the monk achieves the status of a living saint.

Women’s Olympic Volleyball 1964

I’ve been cruising the internet for video of women’s volleyball and came across this wonderful synopsis of the Japan vs. USSR game during the ‘64 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The editing is quite good, and wonderfully conveys the tension of the competition. There are some amazing plays in there, but what amazes me most is how the Japanese are serving. I’ve never seen anything quite like that over the shoulder sideways hit before.

Siftables

What an amazing mechanism to interact with information. I really like the math, language and storytelling concepts. More on the project on the Siftables web site.

Hello, My Name is Mr. Glasses. I’m an Architect

Spotted on A Daily Dose of Architecture as I was surfing through my Google Reader subscriptions, Mr. Glasses is a series by Mitch Magee that tells the story of the tortured ideals of a modernist architect. Dry. Funny. I couldn’t stop watching. Mitch has other movies available on his YouTube channel.

Super Happy Fun Time Friday

A couple years ago my parents came up for a visit to Alaska. Part of the trip involved some campground “camping”. The kind with those giant bath houses that have concrete floors and many shower stalls. One night while I was in there brushing my teeth, mom walks in and asked what I was doing. Of course, I immediately flashed back to childhood and tried quickly to think what I was doing that could possibly be out of the ordinary. She asked why I was running the water while I was brushing my teeth - like I don’t pay for it at home. At that moment I realized I had - for all my years, been running water down the drain the entire time I brushed my teeth. I had never even stopped to think about it to that point. This video illustrates the potential impact my simple act of changing that one aspect of my routine could make.

Coffee Art

It was warm enough to go for a long run today which left little time for eating breakfast. Coffee is my breakfast of champions this morning.

Who knew there is so much coffee art on YouTube? And who knew it was possible to draw such intricate designs on frothed milk? Amazing.

What is RSS and How Can You Use It?

If you know me and I have trapped you in a conversation about RSS feeds and feed readers at some point… but I didn’t make any sense and sounded like some crazy lady… and you politely smiled and nodded in the hope that I would shut up and talk about something else… maybe this video is much more clear and concise. RSS can really save you time online. Thanks to CommonCraft for creating this.

There are two types of Internet users, those that use RSS and those that don’t. This video is for the people who could save time using RSS, but don’t know where to start.
