The Wave

So lately there’s been a lot of hype about Google’s upcoming product, Wave. I won’t deny that the features in the demo seem very productive/handy/slick, but its the name I can’t get over. Surely I can’t be the only person that remembers watching the ’80s movie The Wave. Thinking back, I remember watching it as one of those After School Specials that used to make frequent appearances on TV, with their persistent efforts to instill moral goodness in young kids. After a minimal amount of searching on YouTube I was able to find evidence of it (see below).

What I hadn’t realized was that the story had been loosely based on the story of an actual high school class during 1967 - first retold in Todd Strasser’s novel The Wave, and then redone as a feature-length film, Die Welle, in 2008. Maybe I just happened to watch this movie at a very impressionable point in my childhood, but each time I hear someone talk about how great Google Wave is going to be I can’t help but think back to this story and roll my eyes. It not that I think that Google has any aspirations for starting a cult (though it is amusing to think about), but the name certainly wouldn’t have made my short list for a new high-profile product, that’s for sure.

For those of you too young to remember this movie parts 1 & 2, and the trailer for the remake are available to view on YouTube. Here’s Part 1 to get you started…

RSS feed to Newspaper?

In the most irritating way possible, FeedJournal offers to bring the technological advancement of feeding/reading news full circle by enabling you to generate a newspaper from your feed content. Kill trees AND read slower with no mechanism for sharing - sounds great! Why not hack a linotype machine to set the text and print the pages too?

Sadly, I know a few organizations that would LOVE this service.

Traditional news delivery for the slow life.

Andrew Keen: The Internet is Destroying Culture

Seriously, it sounds like a joke, but it is true. This post by Roo Reynolds reminded me that I had seen Keen on the Colbert Show promoting his book and was left with such an absolutely foul taste of ignorance and elitism that I dare say I’ve ever experienced before. My thanks to Roo for ranting.

Human Powered

I’m no engineer, or an expert on generators or power grids, but it seems to me that with all of the health and fitness clubs in the United States - and with all of the users of cardio equipment, sweating and panting for 30 or more minutes at a time - that we are ignoring a vast resource of wasted energy. Power the gym itself, or sell the energy back to the main grid and charge smaller membership fees. Even better, pay the people who generate the most energy a percentage of the surplus. Personally, I would bike a lot harder if I thought there were money in it.

XP Help & Support Sucks

I hate the Windows XP Help & Support Center. I only ever think to pop it open when I’m at my wit’s end trying to fix something… but it is NEVER helpful. In fact, over the course of the eleven years I have used Windows the built in Help has not one time produced a helpful answer. Why bother?

The Problem With OpenID

I’ve come to use my OpenID a lot recently, but today the MyOpenID server seems to not be playing well with others. How do I log in to sites I want to use without it? I’ve wondered about this in the past, but it is the first time I’ve actually had it happen.

Unbelieveably Priced

While scanning through books in my zotero collection sorting my latest “To Buy” list I came across Foundations of Augmented Cognition, which of course I added to the list… until I looked it up on Amazon and saw it was $325! In the name of all that is good in this world, does it really need to be that expensive? Definitely a used book purchase.
